About Me

Hello and welcome to my website.

My name is Henry Cleaver. I am 21 years old and live near Wolverhampton in England. I have recently finished a degree at The University of Birmingham studying Chemistry with Business Management.

My hobbies include aviation, Scouts, bagpipes and music in general, and computers. I am a member of the West Midlands Fire Service Pipe Band playing the Highland Bagpipes, which I have now been doing for over eight years and regularly play in competitions and private engagements. I am also available for private tuition at a competitive price. See the Bagpipes page for more info.

At the moment my website is just something I play with during my spare time, I occasionally mess with various parts to keep it looking how I like it and learning new tricks. The one you see now is the fourth generation of my website; it all started off in about 1998 when I built my first website on geocities using their wysiwyg drag and drop editor to share some custom scenarios I had made for Age of Empires. Then I proceeded to learn HTML and CSS properly to produce my second website which was my first to be professionally hosted and was more of a personal site, then I moved on to dipping my feet into PHP. Although my knowledge of PHP is still limited (but growing!), I have managed to pick up some good knowledge and I guess I will continue to play with it in the future.

This site currently is based on XHTML 1.1 and CSS and is tied together with PHP. From the beginning I intended it to be very much based on the current standards, so as a result it works with most modern browsers, including Firefox and Internet Explorer. It has a rather modded version of the popular blogging software Wordpress on the first page which I use to manage my blog, and a photo gallery powered by Coppermine which is mostly the original version but adapted to fit with the rest of the site. There are examples of some websites I have created for various people on the links page.

The whole site is hosted on a server in my loft, which currently runs Fedora 8 and Apache HTTPD. This makes it cheaper than paying around £100 a year for hosting, and means I get more functionality and space to do what I want. I started to learn Linux during many bored moments during my first year at uni living in halls, which eventually grew and it's now a bit of a hobby.

If you wish to contact me about anything, use the contact form and I will reply as soon as possible.
